Obituary of Deacon H. Farr.
We are again called to record the departure of one of the old citizens of Maquoketa. On Saturday morning the 6th inst.,(Oct.6,1877), Deacon H. Farr passed from among us.
He was born in Scroon, Essex County, New York, May 10, 1812. He entered upon a Christian life in his 20th year, and has been known as a follower of the Savior ever since. For many years he has been an honored office bearer of the Congregational church of this place. He was married to Mary Ann Crane in 1834. Ten children were given them, of whom one-half have gone before. The family came to Maquoketa Jan. 1st, 1856, and for 21 years Deacon Farr has been known as a good citizen, a cheerful neighbor, a kind friend, and a Christian man.
During the last two years he suffered greatly from what proved to be a cancer of the stomach. For some months that organ has almost totally failed to do its office. Indeed it is a matter of wonder that the vital forces should have been able to sustain themselves so long in so wasted a body. To those who know how painful his last nights were, it will be especially pleasant to think that soon after the sun of last Saturday illumed the eastern skies, he passed through glory's morning gate, and walked in Paradise.
(Maquoketa Excelsior, October 13, 1877.)
