MAQUOKETA — Soren L. “Red” Schoenthaler, 81, of Maquoketa, died Thursday at Briarwood Care Center, Maquoketa.

Burial will be at a later date at the Mayflower Cemetery, Oxford Junction. His body will be cremated after the service.

He was born Oct. 11, 1925, in rural Clinton County to Orville and Mary Fuglsang Schoenthaler. He married Joanne Straka on Dec. 10, 1947, in Wyoming. She died in 1963. He then married Marilyn Efferding Wood on Aug. 8, 1965, in Lost Nation. They moved to Maquoketa in 2003.

He graduated from Elwood High School in 1944.

He farmed south of Wyoming from 1947 until his retirement in 1988.

He was an active member of Wyoming United Methodist Church, serving as trustee, on the council and sang in the choir. He also worked with the Wyoming Food Pantry from 1980 to 2000, serving as its treasurer for several years.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Ken (Becky) Schoenthaler of Donahue; one daughter, Angela (Floyd) Cook of Dubuque; one stepson, Chuck (Jovie) Wood Jr., of Carson, Calif.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Richard Efferding of Maquoketa; brother- and sister-in-law, Eldon and Laurabelle Rutenbeck of Maquoketa; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorials are preferred.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife and one grandchild.
