ROEDER, PETERMAN, SCHLEMMER, ALTMAN, VAN DORN

MAQUOKETA — Dr. Donald E. Roeder, 77, of Maquoketa, died Saturday at the Jackson County Regional Health Center.

Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Maquoketa, with military honors accorded by Timber City American Legion Post 75 and O’Connor-Regenwether VFW Post 3633, Maquoketa, and Andrew AMVETS Post 62.

Pallbearers will be Drs. Leo Biehl, Joseph Lechtenberg, Salvador Atienza, Troy Roeder and Mark Roeder and Terry Winger.

He was born in rural Jackson County on Oct. 3, 1929, to Gerald and Myrtle Roeder. He married Beverly Schlemmer on Sept. 29, 1962, at Sacred Heart Church.

He graduated from Preston High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Loras College in 1950 and his doctor of dental surgery degree from Loyola University, Chicago, in 1960.

He served in the U.S. Air Force. He began serving as a private and was promoted to first lieutenant. He was honorably discharged from the USAF Reserves in 1971. He was a member of the 19th Medical Wing and served in many locations, including Korea.

In 1962, he started a family dental practice in Maquoketa until retiring in 2004.

He was honored with a lifetime membership by the Iowa Dental Association in 1999.

He was an active community volunteer, primarily with the Rotary Club where he was past president of the Maquoketa chapter and honored as a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Church where he served as a lector, commentator, Eucharistic minister and member of the parish council.

He was president of the Sacred Heart School Board and member of Father Loosbrock Council 8269 Knights of Columbus, Maquoketa. He was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and the Korean War Veterans Association.

He was honored as an all-state post quartermaster by the VFW in 2004.

Survivors include his wife; children, Phillip (Mary Tabor) Roeder of Des Moines, Corey (Penny) Roeder of Dubuque and Megan (John) Altman of Woodbury, Minn.; one sister, Marjorie (Lloyd) Van Dorn of Monmouth; one brother, Virgil (June) Roeder of Tucson, Ariz.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
