Clinton Herald, March 26, 1864

About fifty of the battle scarred veterans of the gallant Iowa 12th, arrived here Wednesday evening, homeward bound on a thirty days furlough. They are a fine looking set of men, brave soldiers, and true as steel. They have had a varied experience since their enlistment, having passed through almost every phase of a soldier's life, enduring the severest hardships, and participating in some of the most sanguinary battles of the Western campaign. At Donnelson, Shiloh, Corinth and Vicksburg they did much toward winning the imperishable fame of Iowa soldiers. The regiment was mustered into the service as Veterans in January last. "Brave boys they are."

(The Colonel of this regiment was Jackson J. Woods of Jackson County. Most of Company I, 12th Iowa Infantry Regiment was composed of Jackson County volunteers. The regiment was organized in Dubuque and mustered into the service Nov. 25, 1861.)
