Clinton Herald, June 25, 1864

The Dubuque Times describes a cave in the vicinity of Iron Hill between the two forks of the Maquoketa River. The entrance is about twenty feet wide and eight or ten feet high, as perfectly arched as could with a chisel. The cave extends into the earth about a quarter of a mile, wide a smooth arched roof, in the center of which is an opening admitting sufficient light to read by. On one side of the room which is capable of holding two thousand people, is a projecting rock called "The Pulpit," and religious meetings have upon various occasions been held there. The floor is level and dry. Near the entrance is a spring of the purest water, and a natural stone bridge spans the ravine before the door of the cave.
