GILBERT BOWMAN INJURED
Maquoketa Excelsior
July 12, 1901

Thursday morning, while mowing, Mr. Gilbert Bowman met with a very serious accident. Something being wrong about the harness, he went out on the tongue, and a fly troubling one of the horses he thoughtlessly struck at it, frightening the horse. He was thrown from the tongue and struck in front of the sickle bar, the guards catching his left foot and drawing him one or two sickle rods. The leg struck the limb at the ankle, peeling off the skin and running forward took everything clean nearly to the middle of the foot. He was helped home by parties within reach and medical aid at once summoned. The great toe had to be removed, the skin being saved and spread over as much surface of the wound as possible, but it leaves a large surface to heal. Drs. Ritter and Pence will endeavor to save the remainder of the foot, causing healing, if possible, by a system of skin grafting. The circulation of the parts is not seriously impeded, which makes a good result quite probable.
