MILLIKAN-BEHR
Maquoketa Excelsior
July 12, 1901

We clip the following wedding notice from the Anamosa Eureka, knowing that the many friends to the Millikan’s of this city will be glad to know concerning the happy event of June 25:

The marriage of Miss Mary Grace Millikan of this city to Mr., John H. Behr of Cleveland, Ohio, was solemnized last Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the home of her parents, Rev. and Mrs. S. F. Millikan. This event has a novel introduction in a series of happy surprises Tuesday evening previous. First, at 7 p.m., Miss Millikan’s S. S. class of girls, about 12 years of age, appeared on the scene; at 7:30 a delegation of the Christian Endeavourers, of which society she has been the leader for some time, marched in; at 8 the Priscilla’s, the young ladies’ aid society, followed, and last of all about 8:30, a lot of the old folks in the church put in their appearance. This was termed a “kitchen and linen shower”- in other words the bringing of presents, articles of every-day use, with congratulations, to the bride to be. Among these were a silver berry dish, table linen, sofa pillow, white comfort, two large rugs, tin ware, cutlery, matches, soap, etc., and finally a big cannon cracker labeled: “To be sued when he is cross.” The various gifts were presented by individuals designated, with suitable acknowledgments by Miss Millikan, and the evening was a delightful one in every way.

On Tuesday of this week, the members of the tribe of Millikan were gathered together for the first time in eight years. They were: Mr. and Mrs. Millikan, Allan F. Millikan of Chicago; Mr. Robert A. Millikan, of the University of Chicago; Max. F. Millikan, associated with the law firm representing the Armour Company in N.Y. City; Misses Grace, Marjorie and Mable Millikan. At five o’clock the wedding march was played by Miss Leila Niles, the company assembled on the grassy lawn under the trees, the groom and bride took their places, with the approving notes of birds of grove and woodland, the brief but touching ceremony performed by Mr. Millikan followed, the beautiful ring services being used. Hearty congratulations followed, a few friends outside of the family being present.

Miss Millikan was adorned in a simple attire of white organdie and wore a cluster of genuine orange blossoms, the gift of a lady friend at Maquoketa. She is a graduate of Oberlin and has been doing most acceptable work as an assistant principle in our graded school for the past year. Her gracious and noble character and her helpful ways have endeared her to all who know her.

Mr. Behr is also a graduate of Oberlin and of the Western Reserve Law School, and has been engaged in the practice of his profession in Cleveland for a year. He impressed all as being a young man of strength, self-poise, and high moral purposes.

Refreshments were served at 6, followed by a social hour on the lawn, with music and singing by Miss Mabel Millikan and others. The house decorations were of ferns, smilax, and roses, all in the most excellent taste. Many valuable and beautiful gifts, some of solid silver, were among the heartfelt testimonials of love and goodwill by kindred and friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Behr took the Midland train Wednesday morning for Chicago, and after a trip on the lakes will go to their future home in Cleveland, where the most sincere well wishes of a wide circle of friends will ever abide with them.
