Clammers on the river-
Along the Mississippi River near Grand View Park is a very busy place just now. Clammers are busy getting their outfits in readiness for the season’s work, and a number of houseboats are being constructed. The object in building houseboats of “arks”, as they style them, is to avoid the trouble of establishing camping grounds and pitching tents or building shanties on ground which they are often complied to vacate on account of some dissatisfaction of the owner. Having their house boats they can go from point to point as occasion demands, cast their anchor and be ready to go to work at once. The parties who have boats in course of construction are McEvarts & Montgomery, John Smith, the Kleins (two), O’Connor and Rapp. It looks like a veritable shipyard in that vicinity.
