On the evening of May 12th, Capt. J.Murray Hoag and wife, Mesdames E.H. Belden, J.T. Wilbur, D.N. Collamer, A.B. Wilbur, J.L. Sloan, F.G. Potter, L.H. Dunham, Fred Tinker, Rose Clary, Lucy Van Eyora, David Wright, Mort Rice, G.L. Johnson, D.H. Anderson, E.D. Rich, W.M. Stephens, Oce Goodenow, Geo.H. Cravens and Miss Julia Dean tendered a surprise to W.S. Belden and wife on the eve of their departure for Marshalltown. After a social time at the residence of Mr. Belden the party adjourned to the Emery House, where a most bountiful supper was served and all united in expressions of praise of the new management of that popular and muchly improved hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Belden were the recipients of many costly and beautiful presents from their assembled friends, and in the dim vista of futurity will serve as pleasant reminders of "auld lang syne." - 22 May 1884, Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa, pg 1.
