August 10, 1898

Four young men at Dewitt got into a box car to ride to an adjoining town. Hardly had they settled themselves when two men entered, and drawing revolvers ordered them to hold up their hands. Instead all made a rush for the car door, the robbers firing on them. Buckley, Bolton and Baird dropped from the train, but Crapser, the fourth, fell and was kicked by the robbers from the train, which was going about ten miles an hour. When the victims found each other it was discovered that Frank Baird, aged 19, had been fatally shot. He died in a few minutes. The others escaped injury.
