Negotiations have been commenced with Andrew Carnegie with reference to the building of a public library building in this city. The other day Dr. D. N. Loose who has been indefatigable in his efforts for a library, received a communication from the wealthy Scotch iron monger, in which a number of pertinent questions were asked, concerning the exact situation here. Monday the matter was brought up before the council and was turned over to a committee, who will answer the questions and endeavor to secure an offer from Mr. Carnegie. We think that there will be little if any opposition to the levying of a two mill tax for maintenance of a free city library, as expressed public opinion is largely in favor. We hope that the council committee will expedite matters as much as possible and that we will soon be able to assure our readers that Maquoketa has a free library in sight.
