Jackson County’s Legislative Delegations Since the Organization of Iowa, 40 Years Ago.

As there is now talk of a reunion of all the living members of the Iowa Assemblies who served twenty years ago and prior to that time, it will perhaps be of interest to many of the Sentinel readers to know who have represented Jackson county in the two branches of the Legislature since the admission of the State into the Union in 1846. In the first three assemblies Jackson and Jones counties were represented jointly as follows:

1846-7, EXTRA SESSION 1848, AT IOWA CITY.
Senate – Phillip B. Bradley, D.
House – Sylvester G. Wasson, D.; George F. Green, D.

1848-49 AT IOWA CITY.
Senate – Phillip P. Bradley, D.
House – Dennis A. Mahony, D., Nathan G. Sales, D.

1850-51 AT IOWA CITY.
Senate – Nathan G. Sales, D.
House – Richard B. Wyckoff, D., J. E. Goodenow, D.
P. B. Bradley, D., Secretary of Senate.

In 1852 Jackson County had acquired a population and prestige that entitled her to a Senator and two Representatives, exclusive of Jones county, and Jones and Jackson still held their old joint Representatives in the Senate till 1860, which gave this county a marked influence in the legislature. This gave us sort of a double headed delegation, as follows:

1852-53 AT IOWA CITY.
Senate – Elisha F. Clark, D.
House - Geo. F. Green, D., L. Wasson, D.

Jackson and Jones.
Senate – Nathan G. Sales, D.

Thus it may be seen that during the 40 years existence of our State we have been represented in the Senate 18 terms by 21 Democrats, and 4 terms by 4 Republicans. To the House we have elected 27 Democrats and 14 Republicans. Both representatives to the constitutional convention were Republicans. A number of our solons of twenty, thirty, and forty years ago are still among the active men in our county and elsewhere. Among the number are P. B. Bradley, of Andrew,; Geo. F. Green, of Miles; R. B. Wyckoff, of Lyons; J. E. Goodenow, of Maquoketa; J. W. Jenkins, Kansas City, Mo.; Wm. H. Reed, Washington Township; J. P Eaton, Maquoketa; John Hilsinger, Sabula; Henry Green, Monmouth; John Wilson, now of Missouri; Alva McLaughlin, western part of Iowa; and members of the later assemblies now living are L. B. Dunham, Maquoketa; James Dunne, Otter Creek; L. W. Stuart, Monmouth; Geo. C. Heberling, Sabula, P. Mitchell, Maquoketa; W. A. Maginnis, Bellevue; J. W. Miles, Miles; A. W. Richardson, Union Center; S. S. Simpson; Bellevue.
