April 16, 1918Maquoketa Boy Probably Lost
The Cyclops, Overdue, Bearing Maquoketa Boy, is Considered Sunk by Naval Authorities.Word comes by wire that perhaps another of Maquoketa’s boys who is in the service has met his death, although there is a possibility of it not being a fact.
The Cyclops, an American boat, was due in American port from foreign lands on March 13, more than four weeks ago, and so far the government has not succeeded in obtaining any word whatever from her. When last heard of this boat was in the West Indies on March 4, but since then no trace has been found of her whereabouts, and it is feared that she has been sunk or some accident has befallen her and her crew and passengers.
Frank Nigg, brother of Charles Nigg, is the Maquoketa boy who is supposed to be lost. Frank was on this boat, he being a lieutenant in the naval forces, and he has been in the service for more than sixteen years. He is a few years younger than Charlie and is perhaps about 38 years of age. His sister, Mrs. H. A. Young, lives in Davenport and his mother, Mrs. Conrad Nigg, has been making her home with her daughter for the past six months.
The ship which is thought to be sunk carried 15 officers, a crew of 227 men and 57 passengers. While of course there is nothing certain as to the fate of the boat and its load of human freight, yet the naval authorities feel that there is little doubt as to its fate, owing to the fact that it is so long overdue in the Atlantic port.
