July 26, 1918Personnel of School Board Undergoes Some Changes
On account of ill health our pioneer citizen and attorney, D. A. Fletcher, has been obliged to tender his resignation as secretary of the board of directors, which position he has most ably filled for more than twenty years. Mr. Fletcher has been identified with our city schools, however, for about sixty years, and his counsel in educational circles will be greatly missed. C. W. Farr, who has held the presidential chair of this body for over ten years, has relinquished this station and will hereafter fill the position made vacant by the resignation of Mr. Fletcher. Mr. Farr is succeeded by M. J. Hoffman, who for some years has been a member of the board, and his ascendancy to the highest chair is to be commended by all. The vacancy thus made in the board of directors was filled at the last meeting of that body, W. H. Haylock being duly appointed to fill said vacancy. The fact that but few changes in the personnel of our school board have been made is evidence that this body of officials is composed of men of merit, and Maquoketa is indeed fortunate that such have been selected as plots of our fine educational institutions.
