January 11, 1896Off for the Gulf.
The little steamer Orion recently left the Dubuque levee for the Gulf of Mexico. Never before in the history of the upper Mississippi has such a voyage been undertaken in mid-winter, and if the Orion accomplishes it her name will be preserved among the traditions of the river for many a day.
Capt. Dixon is in command, and Chris Byer is engineer. The boat was sold by ex-Superintendent Johnson, of the boat ways, to Mr. C. M. Kendrick, a Mexican planter, and is destined to the port of Vera Cruz, on the Gulf of Mexico.
