Sabula Gazette
July 15, 1876

The reports of the butchery of General Custer and a detachment of men by Indians are fully confirmed. It appears from the official report of General Terry that General Custer disobeyed orders in giving battle to the Indians before a junction was formed with the forces under General Terry, Gibbons and Reno, which would have been effected one day later. General Custer was ordered to feel of the enemy, but mistaking the strength and fighting qualities of his foe, and desirous of winning the laurels of victory alone, he made the onslaught which resulted so disastrously.
