Western Democrat, Andrew, Iowa.
Sept. 25, 1850.Is the Maquoketa Navigable to the Forks? –
The enterprising proprietor of the town of Lowell, David Sears, Esq., has at last settled the above question. He started from that Town Tuesday week, at 2 o’clock P.M. with a flat boat loaded with 110 bbls. of flour. Length of boat 60 feet, breadth 12, drawing 12 inches. He made the mouth of the Maquoketa, a distance of about 50 miles, in 18 or 20 hours running time. Mr. Sears proposes to start out his boat again in a few days. We shall refer to this matter again next week.
