Jackson County Whig Convention – 1850

Capt. E. G. Potter of Bellevue, Wm. Morden (Old Farmer) of Farmer’s Ck., and P. H. Conger of Tete Des Morts, were nominated. After several ballotings, the result was declared in favor of Potter. The candidate came forward and accepted the nomination in an eloquent speech, (we suppose it was all that, for we couldn’t hear it, though not more than eight feet from him, nor see him with the whiggies clustered around him so close, each apparently desirous of getting his hand on to the little great man, in order to get a hold on the nipple in case he was elected. We couldn’t see very distinctly, the room was so dark, but we actually thought we saw one fellow on his knees rubbing him down, fitting him for the race.) Well, the vacant seat in the Senate being disposed of, the cloud of war gathered over the convention, and they entered into the contest for Representative. Several were nominated, among whom were the Old Farmer, the renegade loco, P. H. Conger, Wescott Davis, John Galloway, Samuel P. Reed, & c. After the first ballot the race (we are informed, for we left after the nomination of Senator,) was principally on one side, Mordan and the others having withdrawn, Conger winning by a large majority.

The convention then chose for the whig candidate for Clerk of the District Court, D. G. Watkins of Bellevue, for Pros. Attorney, Joseph Kelso of the same place, for Com’r in the 2d District, John T. Sublett of the same place, and in the 1st Dist. Shadrach Burleson of South Fork. Four out of the six candidates taken from Bellevue. Really, whiggery out of that place seems to be scarce. After adopting some resolutions which amounted to so much that they never will be read by five live whigs, and appointing Wm. A. Warren, D. F. Spurr, S. P. Reed, S. H. Coolley, and John Galloway, a central com. for the ensuing year, and resolving that the Dubuque federal papers publish the proceedings, the convention adjourned.
