December 7, 1926Sabula-Savanna Bridge Bill May Be Rescued
-Revival of the fight in the Iowa legislature to establish free interstate bridges is in prospect tomorrow, with Senator Charles S. Browne, of Jackson county moving to have the senate call his bridge measure from the sifting committee where it apparently has been slated for rejection.
Senator Browne today told the senate that the sifting committee did not look favorably upon the measure and that he believed it to be of sufficient merit to warrant consideration by the full senate.
The bill is similar to the one now in the Nebraska legislature and proposes that the highway commissions of adjacent states negotiate for purchase of bridges and arrange the details in such a way that the tolls would cover part of the purchase price. After the bridges are paid for they would be operated free of toll and maintained jointly by the states interested.
This is the only bridge bill remaining before the legislature, the house having killed a bill several weeks ago proposing that one-half of one percent of the primary road fund be used in purchasing interstate bridges. The assembly has adopted a resolution asking the federal government to join with the states in establishing free interstate bridges on federal highways.
