November 8, 1902

A SPLIT TICKET.
Cummins Carries the County by 218 Majority.
Hilsinger is Re-Elected
Hugh Tracy Overwhelmingly Defeats Cooper for Supervisor

Notwithstanding the bitter fight made upon him, Hon. G. G. Hilsinger was re-elected Representative by just about the same majority which he received two years ago over Mr. Blessing. Charles R. Bell and C. C. Dudley, Republican and Democratic nominees for Treasurer and Superintendent, respectively were successful by large majorities. The surprise of the day was the strong run of Henry Ryan who defeated Mr. Bowling for Sheriff by 535. For Coroner the Democrats pushed Dr. J. O. Ristine into the position by a narrow margin, while Adello Seaver retained his grip on the surveyorship. The Democrats elected two supervisors, Hugh Tracy for the 3rd district and Mr. J. Nelson from the 5th, while S. B. Wells was returned from the 2nd. Party lines were well nigh obliterated especially in Maquoketa city, where the fine work of the Johnson-Brandt Company, Limited, was especially effective. Had it not been for the wholesale cutting in the four wards of this city, several more Republican candidates would have been comfortably elected, for while Cumins received 122 majority, Bowling was 306 to the bad, Miss Lundeen 365, and Dennison 85, while Cooper was simply snowed under.
