Jackson Sentinel, August 1, 1878 (Re-printed from Lost Nation Chief, July 24, 1878).
A FIGHT WITH A VICIOUS WOLF-Mr. Jacob Birgnferin, a Bohemian, residing five miles southeast of here, while out hunting for his cows on Bear Creek, observed a wolf close to him. He picked up a stick and threw it, calculating to scare his “wolfship,” but instead the wolf-a “she one,” came for him, and he grappled with her, and a desperate fight ensued between them before he succeeded in killing her, he, Mr. B., using only a pocket knife. The wolf bit him badly, so our informant says, on the right arm. He reached home weak and exhausted. Medical attendance was called, and at last accounts it was feared amputation would be necessary.
