Weekly Maquoketa Excelsior
May 28, 1861THE VOLUNTEERS of this place, Sabula and Van Buren held a meeting at the latter place on Friday last, and united in order to fill up a company at as early a day as possible. The meeting elected the following commissioned officers for the company, leaving the non-commissioned officers to be elected when the company is filled:- Captain, A. W. DRIPS, Maquoketa; 1st Lieutenant, F. M. KELSEY, Sabula; 2d Lieutenant, ALPHEUS ALEXANDER, Van Buren. The meeting was a good one, and the election unanimous. The company was named the “Jackson County National Guards.”
Our boys are indebted to the good people of Van Buren for the good treatment received at their village, and express the desire that they may have many opportunities of “messing” with the boys at no distant day.
The company roll is filling up fast, and those who wish to enlist should do soon, otherwise they will not have a chance.
