MIDLAND

Jackson Sentinel, May 25, 1871.

Midland Railroad.

Work on the Midland, within the city limits, is progressing as fast as the nature of the case will permit, although a great deal of heavy work remains to be done. The heavy embankment forming the southern approach to Mill Creek bridge, is not yet finished, and the bridge itself is but fairly commenced. Five switches are to be put in on the depot grounds, occupying a space one hundred and fifty feet wide at the Main Street crossing. This will, of course, preclude the possibility of an underground crossing, and teams coming from the south will be compelled to cross the six tracks, unless a new road further east be opened. From present indications it is not likely that the work of laying iron will commence before the middle of next month. (The abandoned railroad bed can be seen in the area between the present location of Bullocks and Horseshoe Pond Park. Mill Creek is now known as Prairie Creek and crosses Main Street at Horseshoe Pond Park, and crosses Highway 64 at Costello's Old Mill location.)
