Jackson Sentinel, January 8, 1903:

Union Veterans Union.

Last Friday night R. M. Anderson, 5th Regiment Department of Iowa, U. V. U. installed their officers for the ensuing year. In addition to the U.V.U. club there were a number of invited guests and the old I.O.O.F. Hall was filled to overflowing with a happly throng of veterans, their wives, children and grand children. The following officers were installed, Col., J. W. Ellis; Lieut. Col., J. H. Crane; Major, Henry Smith; Surgeon, Lee Lovelee; Quartermaster, D. F. House; Officer of the Day, O. L. Ripple; Officer of the Guard, A. J. York; Adjutant, Z. S. Patterson; Chaplain, R. Jamieson; Sergeant Major, Frank Keeley; Quartermaster Sergeant, H. Graham.
Col. A. M. Phillips, an officer of the National Command was the installing officer. Dr. Collins said that the eulogy of Col. Phillips on Col. Ellis was the finest thing he heard or read. At the conclusion of the installation services, the Ladies of the U.V.U. club served refreshments, after which the meeting was turned into a camp fire and many interesting reminescences were related which called forth rounds of applause from the audience. Col. Phillips related a sad sketch of history connected with the death of Robert Anderson, for whom the regiment was named. Comrades Jameson, Keeley, Graham and others told stories of Army life in the long ago, some were amusing and others pathetic. All in all it was an evening of enjoyment and to be remembered.
