Maquoketa Sentinel, September 22, 1868:
ACQUITTED
Bucklin and Nelson who have been on trial in DeWitt during the past week, for complicity in the assassination of Cronk, were acquitted last Saturday, the jury having been out but a short time. In all probability, this action will seal the doom of Watkins, as it was generally understood that unless some new evidence was adduced on this trial in his favor, that the sentence of the law would be carried into execution.
(Watkins was granted a new trial for the murder of Cronk, and there was no further prosecution.)
