Maquoketa Record, June 25, 1907:
A body of a man was found floating in the Mississippi River, two miles north of Bellevue, last Saturday night. Coroner Ritter was notified and an inquest held on Sunday. The only thing found on the body by which it might be identified was a handkerchief and upon it the initials S.A.G. The remains had been in the river for several days and were badly decomposed. There was no marked evidence of foul play and this death was likely either accidental or suicide.
