Jackson Sentinel, July 27, 1854:
Proceedings of the Whig Meeting.
At a Whig Mass Meeting held at Andrew, July 8th, 1854, Judge Berry was appointed Chairman and J.D.Howard Secretary. After some informal balloting, J.P.Edie and John Galloway were nominated candidates for Representatives.
On motion, A. Ballou, J. Hershberger, J.L.Kirkpatrick, J.H.Smith and J.W.Jenkins were appointed delegates to meet the delegates from Jones County in joint convention at Canton on the 15th inst. to nominate candidates for Senator and Representative.
After balloting, the following named persons were recommended to the joint convention as candidates for county offices: J.M.Brakey, Clerk; Joseph Kelso Prosecuting Attorney and James C. Wilson, County Surveyor.
On motion, Jonas Clark, J.W.Jenkins and William Morden, were appointed a committee to draft a preamble and resolutions.
Among the resolutions adopted was:
Resolved. That we regard Slavery as an evil, and so regarding it we cannot remain silent or inactive, while we see such powerful, systematic and determined efforts to extend the area of its influence.
