Maquoketa Record, Sept. 26, 1906:
Those two most popular young people, Miss Nettie Swigart and Joe Shannon, came to the conclusion often made by young people after a pleasant courtship and on Wednesday last, in the presence of a large number of invited guests took the solemn vows that united their lives and fortunes here below and which those of a more romantic turn of mind love to think are continued in the world to come. This happy event occurred at the pretty home of the bride's mother, Mrs. Philena Swigart, in this city, with the unusual accompaniments of wedding marches, matrons of honor, best man, flowers, smiles, most lovely costumes, bride's roses, ferns and the innumerable dainty things that fittingly adorn such festive occasions. Rev. L. L. Lockard performed the interesting ceremony according to the ritual of the Methodist Episcopel Church, the ring service being used. A wedding feast was spread and served, after which the happy couple took the 4:20 train for Kansas City followed by a jolly crowd of guests who accompanied them to Delmar to see them safely on their way.
