Maquoketa Record, April 25, 1906:
Maquoketa Will Do Its Part.
Active Measures Being Taken for the Relief of Earthquake Sufferers.
At call of the Mayor(F.C.Gregory), a representative body of citizens met Monday night and appointed a Central Canvassing Committee to solicit funds for the San Francisco earthquake and fire sufferers. This Central Committee met Tuesday noon and a public call for funds was ordered published in all the city papers.
The committees appointed to receive donations are the chief officers of each lodge in the city, the president of each ladies' club, the pastors of churches, the cashiers of banks and a citizens committee.
An entertainment will be given in the Opera House the latter part of the week by Prof. R.J.Hammel, proceeds to go to the relief fund.
Public subscription list will be found at each of the city banks. The monies collected will be sent direct to the Red Cross Society at San Francisco.
Contributions are asked for before next Monday night.
Let the donations be liberal. The cause is a most worthy one. Do your part. It is more blessed to give than to receive.
