JAMES FARLEY of Preston, was a welcome Sentinel caller Thursday last. Mr. Farley is not a stranger to these parts. Away back in 1837, 56 years ago, where Maquoketa is today, Mr. Farley, then a lad of about 15 years, encamped over night with a party, within what is now Maquoketa. He said the country on this side of the river was all open prairie where our town stands. He remembers that on Mill Creek, about a half mile above the present south bridge, there stood a log cabin, occupied by a man, if his memory served him right, was named Hayden. New settlers were coming into the country then slowly, and he was living with his father who was about the first settler in Van Buren township. He says that east of town, two or three miles, he marked a quarter section, that he thought he might return to and settle upon some day, but he didn't do it and remained in Van Buren township. He has today, a good, big farm in that township which he acquired in early years and from whichhe now receives rentals sufficient to live a well earned life of ease in Preston.
