Jackson Sentinel, Maquoketa, Iowa, May 12, 1944
2nd Lt. R. H. Rasmussen, 29 year old, B-17 navigator, of 513 South Fourth Street, Maquoketa, was recently assigned to an AAF Flying Fortress unit of the Fifteenth Air Force, in Italy and is believed to have taken part in recent bombing attacks in Bucharest.
Lt. Rasmussen joined the Army on March 22, 1942 and received his cadet appointment on May 23, 1942. He received his navigator wings on March 6, 1943 at Victorville, California. He flew his first combat mission over Cassino, Italy on March 15, 1944.
Lt. Rasmussen graduated from Maquoketa High School in 1932. He attended the University of Iowa from 1934-1936. His wife, Mary Jane Rasmussen, resides in Maquoketa.
