George Byron Evans

The first veteran of World war I to be inducted into the Army for service in the present conflict was Byron Evans, who was inducted into service at Camp Dodge October 19, and reported back for active service on November 2, after a two-weeks furlough.

Evans was an artilleryman during the last war, serving in France with the 71st C. A. C., Battery F. He enlisted March 27, 1918, and was discharged on March 7, 1919. He was very popular and was a member of the Maquoketa police force and commander of Timber City post No,. 75, the American Legion, at the time of his induction.
