Benj. Vansteinburg took a run home from Des Moines, Saturday, during the recess. The Gate City, in speaking of the officers of the House of Representatives, has this to say of our fellow-townsman Vansteinburg: “The popular and efficient first-assistant clerk of the House was born at Newport, Herkimer county, New York, moved to Iowa in 1858, went into the army in 1862 as a member of Co. A, Twenty-fourth Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He lost his right arm and received a fracture of the left fore-arm at the battle of Champion Hills, May 16, 1863. Was twice elected to the office of County Recorder of Jackson county, Iowa, and has been first-assistant clerk of the House of Representatives for fourteen terms previous to the present."
