Capt. POTTER & Dr. SALES.

We wish to say a few words about the Democratic and Whig candidates for the Senate.

Dr. Sales, the Democratic nominee, is one of the oldest settlers in the West, having been engaged with much credit to himself in the Blackhawk War of 1832. – He had resided in the West for some time previous to that period and had secured the confidence of many of the early settlers. He resided for some years at Iowa City engaged in the practice of his profession, and won largely upon the esteem of the citizens of that place and vicinity. He removed some years since to the growing town of Anamosa in Jones county, where he continued his practice. In 1848 he was elected by the people to represent them in the lower house of the General Assembly. – While in that body he secured the favor and confidence of the Democratic Party and that of his constituents. If he is elected to the Senate he will be governed by that liberal policy which embraced the whole district. He is no Native American to exclude one portion of his constituents from his exertions and sympathies. If elected he will stand by the principles of the Democratic Party and the interests of his constituents.

Capt. Potter is an old Illinoisan, speculating from the farmer and toiling mechanic.

In times of plenty he has reduced the price of wheat to a mere song, and then in times of scarcity has raised the price of flour because the necessities of the farmer compelled him to have it. He has made a fortune by speculating upon the necessities of the people.

It’s all right! All right! All in the trade. But will you vote for such a man?

Again another specimen of his illiberality. The Capt. is a Native American. He is in favor of excluding the follower when he seeks a home on our soil from the right of citizenship until he has been here 21 years, and making him ineligible to any office.
