Jackson Sentinel, Oct. 15, 1891.

Our Candidate for Superintendent.

L. B. Parshall, who comes before the people as the nominee of the democrats of Jackson county for the office of Supt. Of Public Instruction, was born in Seneca Co., New York, in the year 1840. He attended the graded school of his native town, and after completing the course there entered the Northville Academy of Suffolk Co., New York, preparatory to entering the university.

As Mr. Parshall was dependent upon his own exertions to some extent for financial aid to carry him through school, he went into the school room as instructor.

In 1865 he was regularly enrolled in the department of science in Yale College, spending three years taking this course. In 1868 he was graduated with the degree of Ph. B. Coming west to take up his abode he engaged in the work of teaching for five years; his last school being in College township, Linn Co., Iowa, in 1881. He has always taken a great interest in intellectual and educational pursuits, serving on a commission to conduct competitive examinations for scholarships and lecturing on special subjects before teachers’ institutes.

Since 1883 he has been engaged in making chemical experiments and products from wood at Canton, this county. Charcoal, wood tar, wood alcohol, and acetic acid being some of the results of these experiments. As the literature of this business was mostly in the German tongue, a thorough knowledge of the modern languages was necessary.

To be able to even enter the school from which Mr. Parshall was last graduated, requires a thorough and definite knowledge of the English branches, far superior to that of those engaged in the common school work in Jackson county and which eminently fits Mr. Parshall to raise the standard of scholarship in our schools and among our teachers.
