O. H. McCaffrey was born in Liverpool, Nov. 12, 1852, and crossed the Atlantic at the age of 1 yr. and 8 mos., his parents settling on a farm in Trumbull county, Ohio. At 18 years of age and after receiving a common school education, his parents bound him to serve an apprenticeship at the carpenter’s trade which he did for four years. He then engaged in the lumber business and successfully shipped some of the largest white oak timber ever sent to New York and Buffalo. In 1881 he came to Maquoketa, Iowa, and did contracting and building. He served a short term in the mail service before his nomination and election in 1889 to the office he now fills. His nearly two years official service in the sheriff’s office has proven him a capable and worthy official entitling him to a renomination. He has been vigilant and fearless in the performance of his duties and is always a democrat. His reelection is assured by a large majority.
