John A. Wright
The subject of this sketch was born in England on Sept. 11, 1852, and emigrated with his parents to America and to this county in 1855, where they settled in Otter Creek township. He grew to manhood and followed agricultural pursuits until 1888, when he came to Maquoketa and engaged in the mercantile business, establishing the firm of J. A. Wright & Co., dealers in groceries, boots and shoes. In this business he has met with a large degree of success and is numbered among the solid financial business men of the city. A couple of years ago he established a branch store near the C. M. & St. P depot and placed his son, Howard, in charge, under whose courteous management it has secured a fair patronage from residents in that part of town.
Mr. Wright has been honored with various local offices, having served on the city council for four years where he made a good record.
