History of Jackson County, Iowa, 1879.

Biographical Sketches:

JOHN WOODS, farmer , Section 2, South Fork Township, P. O. Maquoketa; is a native of Clermont Co., Ohio, and was born Feb. 24, 1812; he grew up to manhood there, and engaged in teaching school until he earned money enough to enter 80 acres of land in Rush Co., Indiana. He lived in Indiana until he came to Iowa; he located in Jackson County in October, 1850, on the place where he now lives, and engaged in farming; he has lived there over twenty-nine years, and is one of the oldest settlers in this neighborhood; he has held offices of Justice of the Peace, Township Trustee, and other town and school offices; he owns 180 acres of land. In October, 1833, he married Miss Susan Sells, a native of Clermont County, Ohio; she died Feb. 12, 1864, leaving eight children- Ellen N., now Mrs. Sadler, living in Clinton Co.; Benjamin E., living in Decatur County; Maria, now Mrs. Roach, living in Decatur County; Robert in this county; Joseph in Woodbury County; Mary, now Mrs. Nichols, at home; Columbus L., at home. Mr. Woods married Louisa Wade, a native of Pennsylvania in 1864; she died Feb. 20, 1879; Mr. Wood had two sons in the army- Allen and Robert; Allen served in the 31st Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and was wounded and died in the hospital at Nashville; Robert served in the 2nd Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, and was in the service over three years.
