March 11, 1869MAN STABBED – UNFORTUNATE AFFAIR.
One of the most unfortunate affairs that we have ever been called upon to chronicle in this county, occurred on Saturday, the 27th ult., a short distance east of this city, in Maquoketa township, resulting in the almost fatal stabbing of a man named Ed. Taubman, at the hands of one N. E. Hoyt.
The particulars, as near as we can gather them, in view of the wide difference in the statements of the several parties, are as follow:
Five men named Ed. Taubman, P. Stein, J Kinraid, Jno. Kelly and Joseph Taubman, all near neighbors and residents of Clinton county, were returning home from this city, on the Sabula road, in a common farm wagon, and when about two miles east of town were overtaken by Mr. Hoyt, who was riding on horseback. As he came up with the parties in the wagon, one of them asked him what he would take for his horse? Hoyt replied that he would take $125; whereupon another of the party, in an insulting manner asked him if he wouldn’t take seventy-five cents, as that was about all the animal was worth. Hoyt retorted in no very gentle terms, and after bandying epithets backward and forward for a short time, Ed. Taubman got out of the wagon and approached Hoyt, for the purpose, no doubt, of settling the dispute by force. As Taubman came within reach, Hoyt draw a large bladed pocket-knife, and striking downward with all his strength, the blade entered his left shoulder, and penetrated into the vicinity of the lung. Taubman still retained his hold on Hoyt, attempting to drag him from the horse, when Hoyt again stabbed him through the arm. By this time Taubman’s comrades came to his assistance, and Hoyt galloped off.
Taubman was conveyed to his home, and medical aid obtained. His injuries were found to be of the most serious nature, and he still lies in an extremely critical condition.
Hoyt has been arrested, and is now in custody, awaiting the result of Taubman’s injuries, when a thorough investigation will bring all the facts to light. Until then we shall forbear comment.
