Walter J. McCarthy of Maquoketa, an editorial writer for the Jackson sentinel the past year, this week announced that he has relinquished that position. Mr. McCarthy will assume the Jackson County Attorney's post the end of the week. He defeated the Republican incumbent, Ralph M. Kauffman by a small margin in the Nov. 4 general election. McCarthy is a Democrat. His duties as County Attorney, he said, "will demand too much of my time and energies to permit any 'outside' activity of this sort."
Commenting on his writing for the Sentinel, Mr. McCarthy expressed the hope that "the articles I have written expressing my opinions have been food for thought and discussion That was the intent as I prepared them from week to week.
"It is my regret that I discontinue my attempts in the field of journalism and I want to thank the many people who have told me they enjoyed reading my articles, even though, in many instances, they didn't agree with their content", the Maquoketa attorney remarked.
McCarthy said that he was"happy to know that some interest was aroused, at least in a few cases," by his editorial work. What he termed "partisan comment, both pro and con," had reached him by mail and phone he disclosed. "Very few, if any editorials have the complete embodiment of every reader's views-and from the comments I received." McCarthy asserted "I proved to be no exception in that respect. The aim of every editorial," he said he believed"is to stimulate, discussion and ultimate action."
Expressing his thanks also to Robert T. Melvold, publisher, McCarthy added that he hoped "the services of a member of the Democratic Party will be secured to 'carry on' in The Sentinel during the national Republican era. It's always best to hear from the opposition from time to time," he concluded. (Jackson Sentinel, January 2, 1953.)
