James Murphy was born about 1843/5 in Stockholm, St Lawrence Co. NY. He may have served with the 92nd Regement Co H of NY Vols. in the Civil War. About 1866/7 he came to Hespeeria Michigan with his mother and her new husband--"Betsey" Elizabeth (Edgerton) Murphy-Brooks and Schuyler Brooks and some of the Brooks and Murphy children.

Later we find James Murphy--married to Susan Ann Lacken (born about 1848 in Lower Canada)---They married 3 Jan 1882 in Iowa City Iowa. She is the daughter of Patrick and Mary (Mcfee) Lacken
One history I found in a NY History book said that James--went west and engaged in ranching and possibly joined the British army--but this history is known for erroes so this may not be true. James did try to keep his fathers contract farm going until the Civil war when he and his brothers culd not keep up the payments and they lost the farm. ( His father-John Murphy-died in 1855) If he was doing something out west it most likely was --farming--as such is stated on his marriage papers. I am wondering if there is any indication that a James Murphy may have had a farm near Iowa City Iowa??

They had a son--Lester B. Murphy born about 1892. I am thinking James must have died about 1899-1900 but I need his death record to be sure.

A 1910 census finds Susan and Lester in Ward nine Detroit Michigan listed with 3 other males in the household--bossibly boarders. I would like to know when she passed on and what became of Lester?? Did he marry and have children?? Are there present day descendants?? Can any of you help me solve this mystery? I would appreciate this a lot. Thank you for trying. Sincerely; Jo Ann Hatstat jo@vermontel.net
