Missing ancestor

June 7, 1876, Winterset, Madison Co., Iowa.
Sarah Ellen (Matthews)Hager gave birth to twin girls: Sarah Susan Hager & Nancy Jane Hager. Nancy Jane is my gr-grandmother. Their father was Josiah D. Hager. They also had 2 older girls. Supposedly Sarah Ellen "ran off with a traveling salesman" shortly after the twins' birth and disappeared. Josiah remarried in 1880 and raised the girls in Missouri and various states. I'm trying to find any record of Sarah Ellen (Matthews) Hager from 1876 forward. Did she die or remarry in Iowa?
