Helen Hertel, 96

Funeral service for Helen Hertel, 96, Amana, was held at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8, at the Middle Amana Community Church. She died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013, at Colonial Manor of Amana.

Church elder Mike Shoup officiated at the service.

Burial was in the South Amana Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Amana Church Society.

Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo, was in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.kosterfuneralhome.com.

Helen Hertel was born Oct. 14, 1916, in South Amana, the daughter of Herman and Mary Setzer Berger. She attended school in South Amana and later attended the Cedar Rapids Business College.

He married Henry Emil Hertel Nov. 10, 1948, in Cedar Rapids. In addition to being a wife, mother and homemaker, she had worked in the communal kitchen, the shoe store and later as an accountant in the Amana Refrigeration office.

Hertel is survived by one son, Larry, South Amana; one daughter, Lynda H. and Brian Flaherty, South Lake, Texas; two grandchildren, Kellie and B. Kyle Flaherty, and a sister, Emma Johnson, Norwalk, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband, June 3, 2011; her parents; three brothers, Fred, Adolph T. “A.T.” and Dan Berger, and three sisters, Christine Engelhaupt, Dorothy Marz and Emily, in infancy.
