Paul A. Zimmerman,73, died Sunday evening, Dec. 19, 1999, in St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, from complications of Parkinson's disease. Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday, Amana Community Church. Elder Michael Shoup will officiate. Burial: Amana Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the church. Arrangements are with Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Emma; a son, Peter of Vinton; a granddaughter, Daniele Vido Bajus and husband Cory of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; a great-granddaughter, Carla Dawn Bajus of Winnipeg; two sisters, Henrietta Young and husband Frank of Cedar Rapids, and Marie Staman and husband Gilbert of Amana; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Carla Vido in 1993, and Ann Louise Zimmerman in 1995.

Paul Adolph Zimmerman was born Nov. 12, 1926, in Amana, Iowa, the son of Peter G. and Louise Herrmann Zimmerman. He graduated from Amana High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Iowa. He married Emma Kolb on June 18, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. For a while, Paul and Emma and a daughter Carla lived in California, where he worked for Lockheed Aircraft. They returned to Iowa, where he worked for Amana Refrigeration for three years. He spent the remainder of his career at Rockwell-Collins, where he traveled worldwide and worked on the Mercury and Apollo space programs. Starting in 1971, he also owned and operated Gemeinde Brau Brewery for several years. He retired in 1988.

He took flying lessons after his retirement but was denied a flying license because of his Parkinson's disease. He spent much of his time at his computer, where he especially enjoyed working on Amana genealogy. He was a member and elder of the Amana Church and a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Instead of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Amana Church Society or Systems Unlimited Inc.
