William E. Landon, age 77, of Williamsburg, died Thursday, July 22nd at his home. A funeral service for William Landon will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 26 at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor with Rev. Ronald Jewett officiating. Casket bearers will be Ted Blofeld, Charles Cronbaugh, Curtis Cronbaugh, Adam Downs, Steve Huedepohl, Grant Landon, Matt Landon, and John Van Rentergham. Interment will follow at Hartwick Cemetery with military rites. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Victor beginning at 12 noon on Sunday, where the family will be present from 6 – 8 p.m. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be directed to the William E. Landon Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home in Victor. William was born the son of William and Sicela Martin Landon on September 4, 1926 in Mountain Lake Park, Maryland. He was raised and educated in Mountain Lake Park and was a graduate with the 1942 Oakland High School class in Oakland, Maryland. Following his education, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the Navy for twenty-three years of his life and attained a Lieutenant’s rank. Following his service with the United States Navy, he was an employee of Ace Federal Reporters in Washington D.C. from 1967 - 1979. He then was employed with Petersen Court Reporters of Des Moines, Iowa from 1979 - 2002. William and his family moved to Iowa in 1974. William was united in marriage to Marilyn Ann Torrance of Grinnell on May 15, 1945 in Galveston, Texas. To this union were born four children: William “Sam,” Leigh Anne, Scott, and Paul. William enjoyed gardening and was an avid reader and stamp collector. He was also one who wrote many poems. His family described him as a family man, who would travel many hours to watch his grandchildren’s activities. He enjoyed staying up to date on current events and debating these events with family and friends. William is survived by his wife Marilyn of Brooklyn; his daughter Leigh Anne Downs and her husband Randy of St. Charles, Missouri; his sons Scott Landon and his wife Toni of Burlington, Iowa, and Paul Landon of Des Moines, Iowa; his six grandchildren; his two great grandchildren; his brothers Charles Landon of Crownsville, Ohio, and Robert Landon of Friendsville, Maryland. William was preceded in death by his parents; his son William “Sam” in 1973; and his sister Mary Betty Landon in 2002.
