Richard L. Hartley, 65, died Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, in University Hospitals, Iowa City, from complications of cancer. Graveside services: 11 a.m. Friday, Marengo Cemetery, by the Rev. Jackie Tjarks. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Kloster Funeral Home, Marengo.
A memorial fund has been established.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn "Becky"; a son, Richard W. "Rich" Hartley of Marengo; a daughter, Melissa Herrmann and husband Eric of Marengo; three grandchildren, Joseph, Anna and Ellie Herrmann; a sister, Betty Jo Mullen of Davenport; and a brother-in-law, William "Hobie" Gilman of Knoxville, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Richard LaVerne Hartley was born June 24, 1940, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Donald and Lucy Wade Hartley. He graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1958 and served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1966. He married Carolyn "Becky" Gilman on Sept. 17, 1961, in Ottumwa. Richard was a foreman at Amana Refrigeration for 39 years, retiring in 1999. Following his retirement, he was employed part-time as a parts inspector for the Collis Corporation.

Richard enjoyed hunting and fishing, attending auctions and watching sports. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
