John Melvin Vogt was born October 1, 1938, in the kitchen of the family homestead, in Marengo. He is the son of the late Melvin and Ada Jane (Swezey) Vogt. He graduated from Marengo High School in 1957. At the age of 18, following his father’s passing, John took over the family farm. He took pride in working the farm for many years. John was united in marriage to Carol Ann Zuber on August 10, 1957 at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Known as “the man, the myth, the legend” to his mentees, John always had a joke or a story to share. He enjoyed diet Coke, black cherry cigars, reading books, watching documentaries, sports and driving around. He was a life-long church member at St. John's Lutheran Church. John spent hours moving dirt; it was a favorite hobby of his. In 2011, the farm John was so proud of, was given the title Century Farm. John was very active on the farm until passing it on to his grandson Cody in 2020, becoming a 5th generation operation.
