Helen W. Plagmann Hartz, 91, of Newhall, died Saturday, Aug. 27, 2005, in the Vinton Lutheran Home after an extended illness. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Calvary United Methodist Church, Blairstown, by the Rev. Jena Manchester and Chaplain Louis Bell of Amenity Hospice. Burial: Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Overton Family Funeral Home, Blairstown. Memorials to Calvary United Methodist Church, Blairstown. Born April 15, 1914, in Hilton Township, Iowa County, on a farm south of Marengo, she was the daughter of Frank M. Plagmann and Bertha A. Bryant Plagmann, formerly of Canterbury, England. Left an orphan by the age of 12, Helen was raised by various aunts and uncles until she graduated from Conroy High School in 1932. On Feb. 11, 1937, she was united in marriage with Milford H. Hartz in Blairstown. The couple farmed the Hartz family farm together for 34 years, retiring to Newhall in 1971. Helen was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Blairstown since her marriage. Helen enjoyed making numerous quilts, performing with the Newhall "Rejects" band and watching her grandchildren grow up. She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Milford of Newhall; three sons, Weston (Jan) Hartz of San Jose, Calif., Niles Hartz of Richmond, Va., and Brian (Marye) Hartz of Van Horne; a daughter, Raejean (Mark) Dondlinger of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Kara and Lisa Hartz of California, Dawn Hartz of Mount Vernon, Shawn Hartz and Jennie Dondlinger, both of Cedar Rapids; and a great-grandchild, Zachary Steil of Mount Vernon.She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; and a daughter-in-law. Memorials may be directed to the Blairstown United Methodist Church.
