Larry Pat Blaylock passed away from a heart attack on October 28, 2021. He was 74 years old.

He was born in his farm home in Kinross, Iowa, on January 30, 1947, to Marvin and Jessie (Edmundson) Blaylock. He was a surprise to the family, as he was the second of the twins to be born that day. He has told us many funny stories of himself and his twin brother getting into mischief on the farm. He played many sports in high school, his favorite sport being football. He met his future wife, Michelle, in high school as well. He graduated from English Valleys High School in North English, Iowa, in 1965.

Larry went on to Northeast Missouri State College and received a Bachelor of Science in Education, while returning to the farm on the weekends to help his family. In 1969, he and Michelle got married in Iowa and moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he taught physical education. Next, they moved to Burke, Virginia where he taught physical education, English, and coached tennis and football in Fairfax County Public Schools. He also taught anatomy and physiology and tennis at Northern Virginia Community College in the evenings. He finished his Master of Science in Education at Virginia Tech.

Larry and Michelle had two children, Shelby and Kyle, and briefly moved to Blacksburg, Virginia so that he could finish his Doctor of Education degree. He became a high school principal in Fairfax County Schools after 7 years of teaching. He worked for Fairfax County Public Schools for 32 years. After retiring from the school system, Larry and Michelle traveled to the Outer Banks and many other places around the United States. He was also a 50 year member of the Farmers Masonic Lodge #168 in Kinross, Iowa. He also went back to work, assisting his son Kyle with his construction and renovation business. He loved to fix and build things and he loved to keep busy. Larry was known for being kind, generous, and helpful. He was also a good listener, conversationalist, and would talk to anyone he met. He liked to joke around with people. He loved to play sports and games, watch his grandsons play sports, and play “Monster” in the basement with them. He would hide in the dark, they would seek, and he would jump out and scare them. They loved it! He was responsible and trustworthy. You could count on him without a shadow of a doubt. He was disciplined and a hard worker that could fix anything. He will be greatly missed.

Larry Pat Blaylock is survived by his loving wife of more than 51 years, Michelle Blaylock, of Fairfax Station, VA; children Shelby Guyer (Scott), of Aldie, VA and Kyle Blaylock (Genevieve), of Burke, VA; grandchildren Brandon Guyer and Kaleb, Kody, and Kellan Blaylock. He is also survived by his twin brother Mike Blaylock (Margaret), of North English, IA; sister Karyl Miller (Bill), of Washington, IA; sister-in-law Sandy Blaylock, of Williamsburg, IA; sister-in-law Gelene Harris (John), of Muscatine, IA; and sister-in-law Judy Gilmore, of Huntsville, AL.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Jessie Blaylock, sister and brother-in-law Karen and Marvin Gent, brother Gary Blaylock, and brother-in-law Fred Gilmore.

Memorial services will be held in Virginia and Iowa in the spring and summer of 2022. His ashes will be spread in Virginia and Iowa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to The American Heart Association (heart.org) or the Farmers Lodge #168 Scholarship Fund ℅ Dave Jackson, 2695 Keokuk-Iowa Road, North English, IA 52316.
