Gene Koenighain, 82, of Iowa City passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2021 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Visitation will be Saturday, March 6, 2021 from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Lone Tree. A small service for family and close friends will follow visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Lone Tree Cemetery. For all those in attendance masks and social distancing is recommended. A memorial fund has been established in Gene’s name.   Sympathy notes may be left for the Koenighain family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

Eugene Donald Koenighain was born on September 28, 1938 in Williamsburg, Iowa the son of Donald and Leona (Kutcher) Koenighain. Gene was a 1957 graduate of Parnell High School. On October 3, 1959, he was united in marriage to Delores Morgan in West Liberty.

In his younger years Gene worked along side his brothers on the family farm, before going into the construction business and owning his own company. Gene was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Iowa City. He enjoyed watching Iowa Basketball, camping, going to bluegrass music festivals, the outdoors, and watching his grandsons play baseball. Gene’s greatest enjoyments were traveling with his family, attending his grandchildren’s activities and the many family get togethers.

Gene will be deeply missed by his wife, Delores of Iowa City; children, Linda (David) Brennan of Swisher, Gary (Karmen) Koenighain of Farmington, Utah, Laurie (Paul) Barthol of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, Greg (Melanie) Koenighain of Hiawatha and Tracy (Trent) DeKoter of Tiffin; grandchildren, Rachel Brennan, Jonathan Koenighain, Jill (Joe) Ambrosi, Brenden (Emilie) Koenighain, Megan Barthol, Kaylee Koenighain, Erin Barthol, Jordan DeKoter, Paulie Barthol, Logan DeKoter and Caden DeKoter; siblings, Rose Finnegan of Williamsburg, Carol Hanson of Hiawatha, Leon (Marilyn) Ko

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Vernon.
